More About BMI
Body mass index is a simple a formula developed by World Health Organization (WHO) to check one’s height-to-weight ratio. According to this formula, a BMI of 18.5 to 25 is considered ideal for a normal person.
BMI is simply a health screener. It does not measure your body fat percentage, muscle mass or other vital health indicators. It gives you a rough idea, so only a Doctor can accurately assess your condition.
Many argue that the BMI calculation method is wrong because it ignores body type, race & activity levels. For ex: a 200 pound weighing athlete & 180 pound ordinary man may have the same BMI. However, according to USA Center for disease control & prevention (cdc.gov) BMI is still a very useful health indicator.
How BMI is Calculated?
With the metric system, the formula for BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared.
Formula: weight (kg) / [height (m)]2
Height is commonly measured in centimeters, divide height in centimeters by 100 to obtain height in meters.
Example: Weight = 68 kg, Height = 165 cm (1.65 m)
Calculation: 68 ÷ (1.65)2 = 24.98
Formula: weight (lb) / [height (in)]2 x 703
Calculate BMI by dividing weight in pounds (lbs) by height in inches (in) squared and multiplying by a conversion factor of 703.
Example: Weight = 150 lbs, Height = 5’5″ (65″)
Calculation: [150 ÷ (65)2] x 703 = 24.96
